Family Fun All Season Long

The Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad offers many special events throughout the operating season.  Below you will find a brief description of each event with the dates listed.  Follow the links to separate pages for each event including photos and fares.

Sweetheart Express

Celebrate Valentine's Day on Saturday (February 16, 2008)

Treat your Sweetheart to a very special evening aboard The Elegant Dinner Train on the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad in Spooner.  The Sweetheart Express features dinner service in our climate controlled, mahogany interior dining car from 1918. The cash bar opens in the club car one hour prior to departure to get your experience off to a great start.  Immediately after departure from the Depot passengers will be seated for dinner.  After dinner enjoy quiet conversation at your table or move back to the club car and dance to sounds of the 60's, 70's, and 80's.

Cottontail Express  (March 22, 2008)

Breakfast with Peter Cottontail 9:00 am

Join us for a family favorite as a giant breakfast buffet is served during our 2 1/2 hour roundtrip.  After breakfast take a visit to Peter's fun car where the kids can have their faces painted, color spring pictures, make cotton candy and sno-cones and play a variety of games.  There will even be a special gift for each child.

Peter Cottontail's Pizza Party 12:00 pm

Peter Cottontail's Pizza Party is a popular new way to celebrate the arrival of spring with your kids because it combines everyone's favorite meal with a scenic train ride and fun in Peter Cottontail's fun car.  Year after year Tony's Riverside, the popular Spooner gathering place, cooks up the best pizza around and delivers it hot to the train.  Your ticket aboard the Pizza Party Train includes the 2 1/2 hour train ride, 1/2 pizza per person and your first beverage, fun and games and a special gift for each child.  Family rate includes 2 adults and 3-5 children, 2 pizzas and a beverage for each person.  Make your reservations for this family favorite.

Easter Buffet
Easter Day (March 23, 2008)

Treat your family to a very special buffet lunch on this 30-mile roundtrip from Spooner to Springbrook.  The cash bar opens in the lounge car one hour prior to departure so you can enjoy a cocktail prior to departure.  As the train departs Spooner Depot, you are seated in the dining car to begin your lunch experience.  You will love the scenery as the train passes through Wisconsin's north woods, along the beautiful Namekagon River, over the Bean Creek Trestle, and along the shore of Green Lake.

Mother's Day (May 11)
Father's Day (June 15)

Join our family and celebrate your dad on his special day as we put together a very special buffet onboard our historic train.  The brunch train departs Spooner Depot at 12 noon and feature a 30-mile, 2 1/2 hour roundtrip to Springbrook.  Along the way you will delight in a scrumptious buffet and see typical sights of the northwoods.

July 10-12, 2008
The notorious gang of outlaws known as the Rawhide Renegades rides again during the Spooner Rodeo.  This gang of misfits stops the Wisconsin Great Northern trains and climbs aboard to put on quite a show.  With their Six Guns blazing, the Renegades have been known to take hostages along with whatever loot they can scare up.  This is one wild west recreation that you don't want to miss!

 

September 19-21 & 26-28, 2008
October 3-5, 2008
See the beautiful fall colors from your window seat aboard our historic train.  Travel back in time as the train passes through fields, woods, and along the picturesque Namekagon River.  The color of nature's fall show explode as the train makes its' journey.  Check out a number of dinner options during this wonderful time of year.
Oct. 11-12, 18-19, & 25-26, 2008
The Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad is proud to offer the Great Pumpkin Train.  This train has quickly become a classic and now attracts several thousand people on weekends during October.  This year the WGNR will have some 3,000 pumpkins from which to choose.  Many great activities make this one of our best family events of the entire year.  Make your reservations early as most trains during October will be sold out.
