About Us

The Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad is a historic excursion and dinner train operating on approximately 20 miles of former Chicago & North Western track between the northern Wisconsin towns of Spooner and Springbrook along the picturesque Namekagon River.  This family oriented attraction combines historic railroad equipment with exciting special events to entertain and educate all age groups.  We hope you enjoy exploring our new web site.  The information on this web site is the most recent available and is intended to give you the ability to begin planning your visit.  Whether with your family or a large group, the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad has a ride or special event that will surely entertain.

Our Mission

The mission of the volunteers and employees that make up the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad family is to give our visitors a historical excursion ride aboard beautifully rebuilt cars and locomotives from the "Golden Era of Passenger Travel."  Everyone involved with the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad is deeply interested in the preservation of this glorious mode of transportation.  Our family's pride and enthusiasm are evident from the moment one of our highly polished locomotives pulls up to the station.  We're glad you've taken the time to check us out, and we are sure that you'll want to come back again and again.

A Message from our Founder

Thank you for visiting our web site.  This is a great leap forward for a company that specializes in dealing with the history of railroading.

We hope that you find our site helpful and interesting.  The people of the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad work very hard to add new events and equipment to our railroad operation each year and I hope that you will be able to follow our progress here on our web site.

The railroad was founded on April 1, 1997 by members of my family and a few close friends who have literally spent thousands of hours to bring this valuable operation to Northwestern Wisconsin.  The railroad operates locomotives from the 1940's and a fleet of mahogany interior passenger cars built between 1910 and 1930.  The cars have been tastefully rebuilt to give passengers the flavor of rail travel from this time period.

I hope that you will share your comments and questions with us and drop in and take a ride on our railroad if you're ever in Northern Wisconsin.

Greg Vreeland, President
